APHORISM

An Exhibition of New Typographic Images from Martin Pearce.

Pursuing his interest in aphorism and proverb, Martin has created a stunning set of large digital prints that combine his love of pop art colours and visual puzzle. The prints present timeless aphorisms in a less than immediate visual form. Stemming from his recent experimentation with high chroma inks on his ten year old Epson Wide Format printer, Martin has managed to create prints that echo the dazzling colours associated with silk screen printing. Each image is printed digitally on Hahnemulle German rag paper using extended chroma printing inks. Martin studied typography and photography in the nineteen sixties at the prestigious Ravensbourne College which employed lecturers from the german Bauhaus, and subsequently spent many years working as a typographer in London studios, his interest in the psychology of visual perception led him to gain a Masters Degree in Developmental Psychology in the eighties prior to his moving to Hastings in 1987. The new prints at first appear to be a jumble of letters, but a deeper exploration reveals a literal statement. Martin’s work is influenced by the writings of Marshal McLuhan, the Beat Poets and the graphic work of Milton Glazer. The Blue Note Jazz album covers of the fifties and sixties also feature, as do the recent works of street artists Banksy and Inky. Included in the show are Martin’s recent typographical posters advertising the Kings Road, Norman Road and  St Leonards on Sea.
